5 TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR 1ST WEDDING DANCE

Updated: May 5

1. SONG

Start with music that feels like you. Choose a track you both connect to — not just emotionally, but rhythmically. Think beyond the obvious love ballads. A sultry jazz standard, a retro soul groove, a Latin rhythm, or even an unexpected pop hit can surprise and delight both you and your guests.

If you’re dancing to one song, aim for something timeless — with a melody that lives forever. If you’re torn between options, a well-crafted mix is a powerful way to tell a dynamic story.

2.LENGTH

The average full song runs around 4 minutes — but not every moment needs to be that long. We typically recommend keeping your First Dance between 1.5 to 3 minutes to keep it clean and captivating.

If you’re doing a mix with choreography, 4 to even 6 minutes can work beautifully — but only when the story justifies it. This is where your choreographer or DJ becomes key: trimming or blending tracks with intention can elevate the entire experience.

3.BASIC STEP

Every dance has a language. Waltz glides. Tango breathes with tension. Rumba pulses with connection. The goal isn’t just learning steps — it’s embodying the feeling.

When I teach couples, we focus first on the natural rhythm of the dance, then on flow, transitions, and how your bodies speak to one another. Once your foundations are in place, you’ll look effortless and dance with a grounded kind of confidence.

4.LEAD/FOLLOW

In dance — just like in love — it’s all about trust and timing. Think of it this way: the lead is the stem, and the follow is the flower. The stronger the stem, the more beautifully the flower blooms.

Practicing lead and follow technique with intention (especially posture, frame, and subtle cues) allows your partnership to look fluid, not forced. When your bodies are in sync, the dance becomes second nature.

5. CHOREO

Don’t let the word “choreography” intimidate you — it’s just organized magic.

Whether you want a classic slow dance, a playful mash-up, or a full-on show-stopping moment, choreography lets you step into the spotlight with intention. The right movement brings out your personality as a couple, highlights your connection, and sets the tone for your entire celebration.

Remember: your guests don’t need perfect. They want to feel something real — and with choreography, they will.
