9 Ways to Reconnect to Your Body This Spring

When the warm weather begins to return, I’m never upset about it, I actually prefer it, still every year it feels a little like being gently woken up. Around this time I also start thinking about what new energy and movement I want to bring into the studio for my clients and students, because whether someone is on a personal journey, preparing for a performance or audition, working on their wedding dance, or getting ready for something like a Sweet 16, I’m always looking for ways to introduce something fresh into their training and experience.

By the time winter settles in, I’ve usually leaned all the way into that cozy rhythm, with my layered outfits on the way to the studio, longer nights, warm soups, and hearty veggie bowls. The pace softens and it feels like my heart gets a chance to replenish itself, and just like that I’m settled into a kind of winter hibernation.

Then spring arrives!! And honestly I notice my body and spirit still a small pull toward that winter comfort. I’m excited about the warmer months, of course, but still appreciate the occasional cozy moments that winter gives. Over the last 2-3 years I’ve started enjoying the transition between seasons more, and it’s become a reminder to introduce new movement into my routine so my body can awaken along with the changes of spring, and that same curiosity always finds its way back into the studio as well.

A few days ago I took an upper body salsa workshop that my body and soul truly needed, and the instructor’s energy centered around gratitude and acknowledging your inner light. Moments like that remind me how important it is to keep learning and evolving, because every experience like that gives me something new to bring back into the studio for my clients and students.

Lately I’ve been having a lot of conversations in the studio about reconnecting with movement, about getting out of the mind and back into the body in small ways throughout the week, and I thought it would be nice to share some of those techniques I regularly share with my students in the studio when they’re looking to grow their movement skills and develop a stronger connection to their bodies. They’re things I often suggest they do at home to stay engaged with the work between sessions. They also happen to be some of the easiest ways to help awaken the body again as we move into spring and start bringing more movement back into our daily rhythm.

Here are a few simple ways you can bring movement back into your life as the season shifts.

Turn your mornings into a movement ritual

Start the day by choosing music that reflects how you want to feel. Let it become the soundtrack to your morning while you brush your teeth, make coffee, or get dressed. Allow your body to respond naturally, maybe your shoulders roll a little, your hips sway, your posture lifts. It’s a simple way to wake up the body and set the tone for how you carry yourself through the rest of the day.

Walk with music and let your body follow the rhythm

When you’re out walking, put on headphones and allow your steps to fall into the beat of the music. Notice how your posture adjusts, how your stride changes, and what other parts of your body begin responding to the music. It quietly strengthens coordination, musical awareness, and presence while you’re simply moving through your day.

Commit to a dance class or training regularly

Give yourself the experience of learning in a supportive, structured space. Dance classes help strengthen coordination, memory, musicality, and confidence while also creating a safe place to express and explore emotion through movement. Over time you begin to notice not only how your skills grow, but how your body carries itself differently.

Create dance nights at home, alone or with friends

Put on music and let yourself move in your own space without pressure. It can be a solo moment of expression or something you share with friends where everyone takes turns choosing songs. The joy comes from connecting to the music and letting your body respond freely.

Reset your posture throughout the day

Take small pauses during the day to check in with your body. Stand upright, release tension in your shoulders, ground your feet into the floor, and stretch gently if needed. These tiny resets help bring awareness back into the body and shift how you breathe, move, and hold yourself.

Train your rhythm in small ways

Play with rhythm in simple ways throughout the day. Clap or tap along to music, or do a small two-step while a song plays. Listen for the layers within the music, the bass, the drums, the hi-hats, and allow your body to respond. These small moments strengthen timing, musicality, and your natural connection to rhythm.

Use music to shift your energy

Music can quickly change how you feel so put on something that matches the energy you want to step into and notice how your body responds. Sometimes just a few moments of moving with the music is enough to shift your mindset and reconnect with yourself.

Move when you feel tension or stress

When you notice tension building, stand up and move your body. Roll your shoulders, stretch your spine, sway your hips, or take a few slow movements that allow the body to release what it’s holding. Even one minute of intentional movement can create a noticeable shift.

Give yourself permission to move without structure

Turn on a song and let yourself move freely without trying to look perfect or “good.” Be playful, copy a funny or exaggerated style of movement, or allow your body to explore movements that feel awkward or unfamiliar. Those moments of playful experimentation help you stay present while giving your body a chance to step outside its usual muscle memory and explore new ways of moving.
